John Onyx was born in the village of Paypay, Peru. Following his adoption, he was raised in West Virginia until enlisting in the United States Navy as a Nuclear Mechanic for the submarine force at the age of 20.
His poetic narratives chronical his life-long journey of navigating loss, heart-break, trauma, shame, and self-hatred. John’s work is crafted to remind us that we’re all in this darkness together, but there is beauty to the darkness as well as finding light.
Furthermore, John actively works towards the cultivation of local poetry groups and events uniting young and old poets together to heal and grow through the beautiful expression of poetry.
